Coffee addiction is a problem that most do not even consider. How many American’s are unable to start their day without a cup of coffee? Many have a difficult time getting themselves going at work or in the day without it. Some people drink several cups throughout the day. This behavior is damaging not only physically, but mentally and emotionally. Coffee is real and it does harm people. The jitters, anxiety, and stress the come between or before coffee intake are some of the examples of why it is considered an addiction. A recent study conducted by the partnership of John’s Hopkins University and American University looked into the world of coffee addiction. The study team analyzed 67 men and women who have been unable to reduce their caffeine intake. The group, on average, consumed nearly 700 milligrams of caffeine a day, which is 300 milligrams over the recommended average by the British Food Standards Agency. The group was split into two: half would receive an hour of therapy with a trained counselor, which included a take home schedule for a reduction in their caffeine intake over a five week period. The other half would receive therapy, but only after waiting until the sixth week. The conclusion is significant. Over 75% of the group given immediate behavioral therapy was able to reduce their caffeine intake to 200 milligrams a day, which they were able to maintain for over a year. The findings show that coffee addiction can be treated with behavioral therapy. This type of therapy is already used to treat individuals suffering with anxiety and depression. The methods are not normally used to treat caffeine addictions. The conclusions of this study are being analyzed by professionals across the country who are not necessarily surprised. The idea behind behavioral therapy is to help change bad behaviors and reactions by learning to pay attention to them. When we are more cognizant of those reactions or behaviors we can utilize learned strategies to reverse poor habits. When patients know and understand a problem, they are more capable of remedying it.
